Paramus Pool Commission says renovations progressing, inspections filed and registration open

Commissioner Suzanne Frankland called the Paramus Pool Commission meeting to order at 7:12 p.m. on May 14. After roll call, the commission unanimously approved the minutes from the April 23 meeting and briefly opened the floor to public comment, which closed without substantive items recorded.

The commission received updates on the pool renovation and site work. Borough Liaison Garrett Luna and Pool Manager Stephen Trocolar reported that draining of the pool is nearly complete and that painting and preparatory work have begun. Concrete work and additional painting will continue during the week, bathroom fixtures are being installed, basketball‑court painting is scheduled next and hoops will be moved to the site imminently. Health and electrical inspections have been filed, and staff said water testing will be scheduled with Hudson Labs.

Administrative items include submission of required paperwork and an upcoming resolution expected Monday. Online registration is live; staff reported they are processing refunds for any 10% discounts erroneously applied and that in‑person registration is proceeding well now that recreation staff have expanded access to Community Pass. The commission also noted that a lawn sign invoice has been paid and brochures will be mailed in coordination with the Borough Clerk and the Post Office.

Commission correspondence included two public requests. Elena, representing Waldwick Middle School PSO, asked to hold a graduation pool party on June 18, 2026, from 1–4 p.m. but said the date is flexible; commissioners noted a scheduling conflict with an Eastbrook pool party and asked Garrett Luna to follow up about alternative dates (June 19 or June 23). Shae Herndon requested permission to lease the pool parking lot to host a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey mobile exam center from Sept. 29 through Dec. 16; the unit would require an assembled footprint of about 50 ft by 80 ft. The commission asked Luna to check with the Borough about leasing and permitting options.

Manager Trocolar outlined program and operations items: water testing, a skin‑cancer informational day set for June 27 (1–5 p.m., informational only, no screenings), a Health Department inspection scheduled for the following Friday, and a weekend cleanup planned 9 a.m.–1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Trocolar said he has reached out to Cintas about restocking and raised the possibility of purchasing an ice maker for the first‑aid room and the concession area. He also said staff will seek lifeguards to teach planned water‑aerobics classes.

Commissioner John Valente reported that the new concessionaire, Peter Martin, is operating smoothly and reiterated interest in a new ice maker for concession and first‑aid use. The Entertainment & Activities committee said DJ Enrico is unavailable for July 4 and that staff will contact Gaitano Fernandez as an alternate. Swim and dive team representatives said they are working on hiring coaches and that the Pacers team will purchase meet‑manager software for swim meets.

Under bills, the commission approved a newspaper advertisement. Commissioner Valente moved to adjourn; Commissioner Brian Casey seconded, and the meeting ended at 8:05 p.m.

The commission directed staff to follow up on the two public requests (Waldwick graduation party and the NHANES mobile unit) and to continue finalizing inspections, registration refunds and outreach materials ahead of the season.
