Council considers naming Odd Fellows Road bridge for local racing figure Earl Lee Brooks Sr.

Council received a constituent request and personal testimony at the July 14 work session asking the city to request that the Commonwealth Transportation Board name the Odd Fellows Road bridge over Route 460 in memory of Earl Lee Brooks Sr.
Staff explained that the bridge is part of the Virginia Department of Transportation system and that, if council desires, staff would draft a resolution requesting the Commonwealth Transportation Board to name the bridge in memory of Brooks. As part of that process, council would need to agree to pay the cost of preparing and installing the signs (staff estimated approximately $1,000).
Council members described community interest, petition signatures and local historical context. A family member who attended discussed Brooks’s racing career (racing in what is now the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series from 1962 to 1979), local pride and his ties to Lynchburg. Council directed staff to prepare the resolution and place it on the next work session agenda.
No formal vote was taken at the work session; staff said the naming resolution would be prepared for council consideration at the next meeting.
