Following an executive session the City Council of McDonough reconvened and authorized Sylvia Smith to serve as interim deputy administrator. A council member moved to authorize the appointment 'in accordance with the city's policies and budget until further notice of the council'; the motion received a second and the clerk announced seven in favor.
Earlier in the meeting several council members reported project priorities for the coming year. District 1 representative Xavier Johnson said he is organizing a district-wide community cleanup and is researching an ordinance or mediation options to address frequent constituent complaints about homeowners associations, noting the city lacks direct punitive powers over HOAs but can provide mediation and a voice for residents.
District 2 councilmember highlighted successful turnout at a community event at Hazelhurst House and encouraged resident engagement. Councilman Scott Reeves previewed Main Street work and discussed gateway improvements near the Lawrenceville Street/Highway 20 roundabout and ongoing planning for the Geranium Festival. Councilman Larry Blue thanked public works and law enforcement for addressing encampment/tent complaints near the Cottages of Avalon and a Dollar General site. Councilwoman Vanessa Thomas emphasized the need for walkable sidewalks connecting neighborhoods to shopping and restaurants as a priority for the year.
The council directed that a postponed Board of Zoning Appeals nomination be taken up at the Jan. 20 meeting and adjourned after closing remarks from the presiding official.
