Orange Select Board reviews 2025 budget and notes town-shed project delay

At the meeting Sept. 2, Catherine Souza, the town clerk/secretary, reported municipal expenses through Aug. 31 totaled $303,055.73 against an approved 2025 budget of $431,174.00, roughly 70% spent to date. Souza said the Road Agent and the Select Board will enter remaining contracts related to the shed and the associated land donation to ensure funds are used appropriately before year-end.
Souza also said that "according to the law regarding the town vote" any remaining money tied to that vote must be spent in 2025 or properly encumbered. The meeting record does not specify the statute or ordinance that establishes the deadline. The Select Board intends to address the accounting and contracting steps to comply with that requirement.
Auditor Tim Greene of Roberts & Greene is scheduled to meet with Souza and Trish at the town office on Sept. 3 to complete the MS-535 financial report. Souza also said the MS-01 town inventory valuation report had been granted an extension because the revaluation data were required to complete it.
The Select Board confirmed it will continue tracking the shed project and related spending; the next Select Board meeting is set for Sept. 16, 2025, at 6 p.m.
