Orford committee asks Selectboard to choose between prefab and custom options to replace rotting bandstand

JJ Hebb of the Parks & Playgrounds committee reported that Orford’s historic bandstand shows signs of rot and structural instability and that the committee has received no reconstruction bids.
The committee asked the Selectboard to review two replacement options: a metal prefabricated unit (committee estimate: under $3,500) mounted on a concrete pad, or a 14-by-26 assembled unit from Carriage Shed (committee estimate: about $18,600 for the unit and installation). Hebb said both options would require removal of the existing structure and a poured concrete pad; the Carriage Shed option would take about 10 weeks to construct and deliver. Ann Green said the committee has raised about $27,000 to date and can pursue additional fundraising if needed.
The Parks & Playgrounds committee will present two fully costed proposals that include the price of the unit, concrete pad, and removal of the existing bandstand for Selectboard review. In the meantime, the committee will place snow fence and “No Trespassing” signage around the structure to restrict access.
The Selectboard did not make a final decision at the meeting; next steps are a formal cost comparison from Parks & Playgrounds to be reviewed by the Board.
