"We're here this morning to talk about this new tree here at Lakeside Park," Mayor Beth Sweeney said, framing the planting as part of celebrations for America's 250th.
Beth Peltzer, regent of the Maria Jefferson chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, invited residents to the official dedication: "This Saturday at 10:00, we would like to invite the entire community to come out for the official dedication of this Liberty Tree and the Liberty Tree Marker." She listed planned program elements including a color guard, attendance by a national DAR officer and state officers, and Judge McGillan as the keynote speaker.
Peltzer said a reception will follow at City Hall, which she noted is air conditioned, and that organizers will provide pop-up tents and hand fans for attendees. She also said flags will be placed along the boulevard and signs will be put in the Lakeside Park parking lot to direct visitors.
Mayor Sweeney thanked Peltzer and the DAR for donating the tree and encouraged residents to attend the event. The dedication is scheduled for Saturday, July 18 at 10:00 a.m.; organizers plan a post-ceremony reception at City Hall.
