Larry Derr and Jamee Hansen came before the council to address recent public comments and minutes about parking at the north entrance of the local school. They said staff and school volunteers monitor dismissal and designated roughly 82 feet in front of the north door as a no‑parking zone to allow for drop‑off and pick‑up. They objected to the city installing no‑parking signs without prior notice to the school and urged collaborative problem solving.
Resident and city staff member Donna Zeltinger described two incidents she observed near dismissal when parked cars limited visibility; she said in one instance a seven‑year‑old ran across the street in front of her because parents were parked on the north side, and that adequate space from the school door to the nearest parked vehicle would have improved sight lines. The council discussed mitigation options including flashing lights, directional mirrors, widening the area in front of steps, hiring a crossing guard, or temporarily blocking the street during dismissal.
The council asked both boards (city and school) to brainstorm solutions and scheduled a joint meeting in June to pursue collaborative remedies. Jamee Hansen said she will look into county grant opportunities to fund safety improvements. The council did not adopt a final remedy at the meeting; instead it directed staff and school representatives to report back with specific proposals and any grant progress at the June meeting.
