Johan presented a proposal to create a small disc-golf course with an integrated walking path along Mastin Creek to broaden the park'9s appeal beyond disc-golf players and help with fundraising. He described adding a few benches, signage and brush-clearing to open a scenic area around a large cottonwood and said the walking path could begin as simple brush clearing and wood-chipping before any formal build-out.
"By including a walking trail ... I think it will help to raise funds from the community by broadening the appeal," Johan told the board. He said he plans to ask the city council to dedicate a $10,000 matching fund and will contact an adjacent private landowner to request informal access for a short walking/throwing path; he emphasized the plan avoids putting permanent improvements on private property.
Staff also provided updates on summer work: beginning the Veterans Memorial project (coordinate a decommission/ceremony and move the sand-volleyball court), considering a modular playground or parking improvements at Northwest Park depending on budget timing, and placing new benches and trash cans around playgrounds. Maintenance updates included a recent inspection by Newman Pools (minor heaving expected for a 10+-year-old pool) and repairs underway to a pool heater with parts ordered.
The board asked staff to coordinate with the American Legion on the memorial, gather project timelines and cost estimates, and bring proposals back to the board for approval.
