Humane Society of Greater Nashua gets sign variance as facility doubles in size

The Nashua Zoning Board approved variances for the Humane Society of Greater Nashua and its contractor to allow two wall signs on a facility that the applicant said will expand from about 9,500 sq ft to roughly 20,000 sq ft.
Kam Pishka of Harvey Construction explained the project and said the building is set back from Ferry Road; existing ground signage will remain. Doug Berry (Humane Society) said the additional signage will help wayfinding for patrons and allow clinic and other new entrances to be clearly marked. “There are people that drive by that see our sign and and actually come in and say they've never been here,” the Humane Society representative said.
Board members noted that the Conservation Commission had conducted a site visit and issued a favorable recommendation with five stipulations; the board incorporated those stipulations into the approval and conditioned that the new signs be used for wayfinding rather than principal street signage. The board also discussed illumination for building symbols to assist visitors in darker months. The motion to grant the variances carried without recorded roll‑call.
