Board approves alcohol sales at SK Riverside Inn convenience store

The Meriwether County Board of Commissioners voted July 13 to approve a request (PC26-011) permitting SK Riverside Inn Incorporated (operating Riverside Country Store and Barbecue) to sell and serve alcohol at its location at 29 River Cove Road.

Planning staff introduced the application and identified the applicant as the new owner of the store; staff allotted the applicant 10 minutes to present. The applicant described recent improvements to the building, successful health inspections, electrical upgrades, and plans to operate a restaurant area within the building. The applicant said the restaurant will serve alcohol within a secure service area so patrons cannot walk out with alcoholic beverages.

Commissioners asked whether the applicant had listed a licensed county representative or agent, as required for nonresident owners; the applicant replied that an employee will serve as an agent and that background checks had been completed. The applicant also said he purchased the building and is working on broader site improvements, including possible future gas pumps.

After closing the public hearing, the board approved the alcohol sales request by voice vote. The board did not record a roll-call tally in the hearing record.

Why it matters: The approval clears a regulatory step for a local business to expand services, which the applicant said will support local dining options and economic activity in a location between Upson and Pike counties.

Next steps: The applicant must complete any remaining permitting and list a licensed local agent on the application; staff will process the license consistent with county requirements.
