Tour de Tonka organizers brief Orono council: Aug. 1 ride will include Orono rest stop and community activities

Ben McClain, representing Minnetonka Community Education, updated Orono’s council on the upcoming Tour de Tonka community ride scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 1.
McClain said the ride is a community event (not a race), will offer four distance options with two routes passing through Orono, and will host an Orono rest stop at Trinity Lutheran Church with live music, food, restrooms and bike mechanics. He said organizers have added designated cheer zones and a family post‑ride area at the high school with activities for children.
McClain gave participation context: last year nearly 2,300 riders came from 22 states, though 94% were from Minnesota cities. He also noted the event’s charitable partnership: “Every year, we partner with the ICA food shelf ... and so far to date, we’ve donated about $105,000,” McClain said. Organizers requested volunteers and invited residents to sign up through a posted QR code.
Council members thanked the presenter, and one councilmember who has ridden the event praised its organization and safety.
