Union City Council hires part‑time officer as chief reports 269 calls this summer

The Union City Borough Council voted Aug. 13 to hire Kenneth Fye from the certified civil service list as a part‑time police officer.
The motion to hire Fye was made by Councilor Joyce and seconded by Councilor Osborn and carried unanimously. Mayor Robert Wolf told the council it is important to maintain a police department in the borough and recommended hiring a part‑time officer to help coverage.
Borough Manager Cindy Wells said the budget had allowed at least $33,560 for wages and benefits; she told council the final cost for a part‑time hire will depend on the number of hours worked and should be less than the budgeted amount.
Police Chief David Pernice reviewed recent department activity, saying the force handled 269 calls from June 1 to Aug. 13, averaging about 3.63 calls per day. He listed call types including vehicle pursuits, protection from abuse orders, warrants, domestic incidents, drug activity, vandalism, burglary, and recent suicide/mental‑health incidents. Pernice said some calls can occupy an entire shift depending on severity.
Pernice also said he and Officer Shelly attended an active‑shooter training July 24–25 hosted by Millcreek Police Department. He reported the UC Community Foundation awarded the department’s applications for four tasers and for security cameras to cover an additional section of North Main Street.
Council did not record further conditions on the hire in the minutes. The council will record the part‑time officer’s hours and wages as payroll actions are processed.
