Mass Cultural Council reports FY27 line-item optimism, highlights island grant celebrations and outreach

Senior Director Bethann Steiner told the Executive Committee on June 17 that the Massachusetts Cultural Council has fared well in the FY27 budget process and that the agency's line item is expected to receive a five percent increase, an outcome she said is uncommon for state budget items.

Steiner said the positive signals arose in part from the Council's recent visits to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard on June 15, where legislators expressed enthusiasm for a proposed investment in arts and culture. She also reported that the Economic Development Bond Bill remains under consideration and that the STEM to STEAM initiative is under review in the House Committee on Ways and Means.

Acting Executive Director David Slatery reported he participated in the Creative Sector Summit in New Bedford and attended grant celebration events on Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, describing Massachusetts as a regional leader that other states look to as a model. Council members said the island visits provided productive opportunities to connect with artists and legislators.

Steiner also announced new year-end communications and data resources on the agency website, noting that updated county funding lists and legislator-specific reports would be available soon. She reminded members of a virtual year-end celebration scheduled for June 25 from 11 a.m. to noon and encouraged Council participation.

The budget remains in Conference Committee; Steiner described the outlook as optimistic but noted the final appropriation and any retained earmarks will be determined through the legislative process.
