Middletown commission approves invitation-only town hall on gender-affirming care, okays research presentation

The Middletown LGBTQI+ Commission voted unanimously Aug. 20 to approve two upcoming events focused on gender-affirming care.
The commission approved an invitation-only town hall scheduled for Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. that will bring state and federal elected officials together to “discuss concrete ways” to protect gender-affirming care, the Chair said. The organizer told the commission the attorney general had withdrawn but multiple state representatives were engaged. The event will be moderated, with questions taken in advance or by invitation only; the Chair said a moderator fee of roughly $400 had been identified.
Also approved by unanimous consent was a public research presentation set for Oct. 1 at the Russell Library. The presentation, delivered by Bliss Kern and described by commissioners as a layperson-focused summary of scholarly work on behavioral outcomes of gender-affirming care, carries an estimated $100 cost for refreshments.
Both items were moved, seconded and passed without recorded opposition. The Chair emphasized the town hall is not an open public forum and described it instead as a workshop-style panel to keep the discussion focused and manageable.
Why it matters: Commissioners said they want elected officials to explain what they are doing to protect access to care amid national-level legal and policy developments affecting gender-affirming services. The invitation-only format and moderated Q&A are intended to reduce the risk of disruptions while allowing officials to discuss policy responses.
