Commission approves Justice Center FF&E but excludes refrigerators after public pushback

Members of the public and at least one commissioner described the beverage coolers as an extravagance given a projected $8 million shortfall in the 2027 budget. ‘‘It just seems extravagant… 90% of courthouses don’t have [under-counter beverage coolers],’’ one commissioner said during debate. Residents urged reusing functioning refrigerators from other county facilities or buying simpler alternatives.
Commissioner (S5) moved to approve the FF&E and operational purchases but expressly exclude refrigerators and under-counter beverage coolers; the motion passed on roll call.
Why it matters: the decision reflects a balancing act between outfitting a brand-new facility to last and public scrutiny of purchases as the county addresses a large budget gap. Commissioners and staff emphasized that some high-ticket items (metal detectors, security equipment) are long-term investments, while certain conveniences were judged unnecessary by the board.
Details: Rombo explained some items were included because county designs and cabinetry may require built-in units; he said some equipment came from the project consultant TEGRA and that several items were state-contract-eligible (Sourcewell).
Next steps: staff will proceed with approved purchases excluding the beverage coolers and refrigerators and will continue coordination with vendors and the budget office.
