Residents say District 2 appointment process undermined public trust

Several residents used the public-comment period to challenge the county’s process for filling a District 2 commission vacancy, saying the outcome appeared to be preordained and that public input was treated as window dressing.

One speaker (S3) told the commission the public ‘‘took the process seriously’’—preparing letters, attending public interviews and returning to meetings—only to walk away believing ‘‘the decision had entirely been made.’’ The speaker urged that future appointments demonstrate ‘‘every application receives genuine consideration’’ and said the process had weakened public trust.

Other residents echoed that view: Tom Montgomery (S10) noted that a candidate who lost an election by 34 votes had public endorsements and that citizens felt ignored; Beth Quayle (S12) urged the appointed commissioner to decline the post if he had any honor. Public commenters urged clearer, more consistent procedures and argued township and community endorsements should meaningfully inform deliberations.

Commissioner responses in the meeting acknowledged the intensity of public concern and the need for the board to explain its deliberations more fully in future appointments. No formal action or reversal of the appointment occurred at the meeting.
