Council approves Celebrate Montrose permits and off-site liquor sales; one abstention recorded

The Montrose City Council on May 18 approved permits and licensing for the Celebrate Montrose hometown event scheduled for Sept. 26-27, 2026.
Terry D'Onofrio, secretary-treasurer of the Celebrate Montrose committee, presented the proposed parade route, two off-sale liquor licenses (including a beer garden at Lions Park and sales at concessions at Carver Field), a bingo license request with a $100 fee waiver, and other activities such as a pedal pull, tractor pull and a car show. "We've made several changes this year in order to hopefully grow the attendance and keep the event growing for years to come," D'Onofrio said, and described moving the event to late September to avoid heat and other competing events.
Council members discussed notifying nearby residents about proposed street closures for some activities; one council member asked whether residents had been contacted and urged door-to-door notification so neighbors could plan for short access interruptions.
The council approved resolution 2026-23 (bingo permit/fee waiver and event approvals) by a recorded vote of 4-0-1 (one abstention by Miss Otto) and approved resolution 2026-24 authorizing off-premises liquor dispensing at the event on Sept. 26-27 by the same margin (4-0-1, one abstention). During discussion, officials confirmed they would ensure event license requirements (including off-duty officer coverage) for locations serving alcohol.
Next steps: organizers will coordinate logistics with city staff, finalize street-closure notices to residents and complete licensing conditions required by the city.
