Montrose council approves three-year Waste Management contract for garbage, recycling and yard waste

Council members voted 5-0 on April 13 to accept Waste Management’s proposal for a three-year contract covering garbage, recycling and seasonal yard-waste service.
Dan Vanke, senior district manager for Central Minnesota with Waste Management, and a company operations representative (Vanessa) responded to questions about billing cadence, service-season handling of yard waste, and support for city events. Vanke said billing is typically handled through quarterly billing split across monthly bills and that Waste Management plans to stagger can swaps two weeks before other contractors begin service deployments. Vanessa confirmed the company included cleanup-day roll-offs in its pricing and expressed interest in community contributions such as a scholarship for a local environmental-science student.
Council members noted past service-transition issues and stressed the value of monthly coordination calls between the city administrator and the contractor during the onboarding period to resolve hiccups. The motion to award the contract was made by a council member who said Waste Management’s proposal “makes the most sense,” and the council voted unanimously to accept the recommendation. Staff will finalize contract details and coordinate customer notifications and can-swapping logistics.
