City staff warns of unexpected $48,000 share for BNSF crossing work on Clementa

City public works staff told the Montrose council on Feb. 9 that BNSF has notified the city of planned upgrades at the Clementa railroad crossing and that the city would be responsible for approximately 50% of the cost.
Public works staff said the work is not yet scheduled but could occur in April or May and would likely require a three-day full closure of the road. The city’s estimated share was described as “roughly $48,000,” an expense that was not budgeted and will require staff to identify asphalt contractors to complete permanent roadway repairs after the railroad’s work.
“We were contacted about a month ago from BNSF stating that they’re gonna upgrade the crossing and the city is liable for 50% of that,” the public‑works speaker said. Staff also said the city will need to provide traffic control during the three‑day project and will notify residents once scheduling is firm.
Council members discussed options to tie the work to planned Clementa Avenue reconstruction next year to minimize duplicative work; staff said they will request more detailed scheduling from BNSF and evaluate contractor capacity so closures are no longer than necessary.
