Board hears mixed assessment results and approves staff development; district to host Lego League robotics qualifier

The board received a broad update on student assessments and instructional programming, approved a Math 180 staff-development contract, and heard that the district will host a Lego League robotics qualifying event in December.

Educator S3 delivered an extended review of foundational reading skills and local assessment data, emphasizing phonemic awareness, decoding, and oral-reading fluency. S3 cited third-grade ELA results showing 10 of 39 students at proficient or better (about 26%) and stressed targeted interventions and monthly checks for students who have not mastered phonemic awareness and decoding.

The board approved an in-person Math 180 coaching package for staff (12 total contact hours, multiple one-hour sessions delivered during the school day) intended to support teachers in math intervention strategies. Chair S2 moved the item and the board approved the staff development funding.

Teacher-organizer S9 announced that the district will host a Lego League robotics qualifying meet on Dec. 7 at Japajal Elementary and asked for volunteer help and minor purchases (for example, floor protection in the gym). S9 said the event will create regional visibility for the district’s STEM work and expects volunteer needs in the weeks prior to the event.

What happens next: staff will schedule Math 180 delivery dates and issue guidance for the robotics event; the board expects monthly academic-progress updates and follow-up on intervention placement for students needing additional reading support.
