Newfields district approves new service and sewer rates after public hearing

At a public hearing on June 8 the Newfields Village Water & Sewer District approved a new structure for service fees and sewer charges intended to reflect higher operating costs.
Commissioner William "Bill" Meserve presented the proposal and told the board that service costs have risen while rates have not changed since 2022. “This is unfair to ratepayers that use less than 10,000 gallons per quarter,” Meserve said as he explained the decision to remove the $94 fixed sewer base for up to 10,000 gallons.
The board approved the following service fees (motion carried 3-0): ¾-inch meter $25.00; 1-inch meter $35.00; 1½-inch meter $40.00; 2-inch meter $60.00; School second meter $120.00 (listed as $60 × 2); industrial private provider (IPP) $9,900 per year; hydrant rate $1,196 per quarter; senior rate $12.50. The meter fee rules will also apply to sewer-only customers with private wells.
Under the new sewer structure the $94 base for up to 10,000 gallons was removed. The board added a $25 service fee per dwelling to support collection-system maintenance (manholes and lines) and set the volumetric sewer rate at $18.88 per 1,000 gallons. Bill Meserve said he would work with the district clerk to update the rates in the billing system.
The hearing drew no public speakers and Chair John Hayden closed it at 8:00 PM.
