Board approves MASB superintendent search, aims for selection by October

Cedar Springs Public Schools' board voted to approve a superintendent search contract with the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) after a consultant outlined a 12–14 week search process.
The MASB presenter said the process is “very transparent” and will include an online survey, stakeholder input sessions, candidate screening, reference checks and staged interviews. He urged prompt approval so the board can lock calendar dates and begin recruitment, saying, “blocking your notes in as soon as possible because you're all busy people and your calendars will fill up.”
Under the proposed timeline the consultant described, MASB would launch a public posting soon after contract approval, run a three-week online survey beginning in late July, hold on-site input sessions in August, and proceed with candidate screening through late September. First-round interviews were proposed for mid-October, followed by a second round the week after.
The consultant said MASB will present full application materials to the board and perform reference checks and additional candidate screening; he added that the board should not conduct its own reference calls during the process. The consultant noted optional finalist assessments (estimated at about $350 per candidate) and said those assessments would likely be reviewed in closed session.
The board agreed to the contract on a unanimous roll-call vote. Board members requested MASB share draft survey and posting language for board review before publication and indicated they would finalize salary range and posting details in August.
