Pike County School Corp. approves withdrawal from dissolving regional special-education cooperative

The Pike County School Corporation board approved a recommendation to withdraw from the regional Exceptional Children's Cooperative after being told the cooperative is dissolving effective July 1, 2027.
Superintendent Thelma explained the cooperative's bylaws require each member district to submit one year's notice to withdraw. She said all special-education teachers are currently employed directly by the district rather than the cooperative, and emphasized that "nothing will change for the 26-27 school year." The superintendent said the district is exploring models and options used by other districts and expects to settle on a path forward by December. A planning team will be formed to work through implementation for the 2027-28 school year.
The board recorded a motion and second and approved the withdrawal by voice/hand vote. The superintendent noted staff are assessing needs, considering different models, and seeking grant and program options (including trauma-response funding and adaptive computer-programming grants) as part of transition planning.
Next steps: administration will form a planning team, continue conversations with peer districts, and develop a transition plan for special-education services to be implemented for the 2027-28 school year.
