CAC awards $2,500 microgrant to Hilltop Neighborhood House for environmental education

Cassie Dalton, speaking for the citizen advisory committee (CAC), presented the results of the committee’s microgrant review and recommended awarding the inaugural $2,500 community microgrant to Hilltop Neighborhood House in Valparaiso.
Cassie Dalton said reviewers used a rubric and unanimously selected Hilltop for a year-long environmental education and outreach program that would combine gardening, recycling, composting and food security and aims to serve about 40 children in its first year. “Their application was to start their first annual environmental based education and outreach program... This program will serve approximately they hope to recruit about 40 children directly for this first year,” Dalton said.
Board members endorsed the recommendation and approved the award by voice vote. CAC members said the application was strong, noted partnerships with local libraries and community kitchens, and said the grant leverages in-kind and matching support from community partners.
Next steps: CAC and Hilltop Neighborhood House will coordinate implementation of the program and report back to the board on early outcomes and community engagement.
