Community divided over Mooney Street extension; board delays decision

Several residents told the Rogersville Board of Aldermen on Oct. 6 that proposed changes to Mooney Street and construction traffic from new developments are a local safety and notice concern.
Nicole Hampton of the Sawyer Creek Homeowners Association said builders had been contacted and some drivers pulled over by police, but she still urged traffic-calming measures and said neighbors support the Mooney Street extension for future access. "She has contacted the Administrator and Police Chief and they have responded and got the builders to clean [the] mess up," the minutes record.
Other neighbors opposed routing construction traffic onto Mooney Street. Melony Phillips asked why she had not been informed about plan changes and whether there would be a public hearing before work began, saying the planned street would be a "right in, right out" with limited use. Sheila Seaton said she "does not want to see the traffic dumped on Mooney Street," especially construction traffic.
Alderman Tim Clarkson told residents the project has not been awarded or voted on and that the board is still gathering information and bids to make an informed decision for the whole town rather than a single area. Earlier in the meeting the board removed Mooney Street from the agenda until the next meeting.
The board did not vote on the Mooney Street extension at this meeting; it signaled further study—including bid reviews and public-notice plans—will occur before any award or formal action.
