Commission votes unanimously to ask city to declare July Parks and Recreation Month

Chair (speaker 3) introduced a resolution on March 31 asking the city to designate July as Parks and Recreation Month. The resolution, which highlights parks and recreation’s role in health, youth development and community connection, was moved by a commissioner (speaker 7), seconded, and adopted by a verbal unanimous vote. Chair declared the motion carried and said the resolution will be forwarded to city council for final action.
Commissioners used new business to raise other items of commission interest. Samantha, the parks director, reported the trail committee completed a trails master plan and has secured a Forest Service grant to help map and maintain the EAC Mountain Trail; she said volunteers will be needed for one‑day summer work events and encouraged commissioners to publicize recruitment.
On another policy matter Samantha said city council moved to pursue renewal of the ski‑hill lease; she explained Parks & Rec holds the master lease and ski‑hill operators sublease the facility. Samantha said the council vote authorizes pursuing the renewal and that any final lease negotiations will be routed to appropriate city staff and the commission for review as needed.
The commission adjourned at 7:14 p.m.
