Cordova council hears updates on pool repairs, fire-department equipment grant and staffing concerns

Sam (S9), introduced earlier by the city manager, reported that staff located a leak in the municipal pool and have estimates from Peterson’s to open and repair the affected sidewall. Sam said a contractor transcribed as "Renosis" would perform follow-up repairs under warranty once plumbing work is complete. Staff noted timelines are not yet fixed and that about 15 lifeguards will need recertification before full operations resume.
Fire Chief Steven Phillips (S7) updated the council on department operations: one apparatus is temporarily out of service after a tire blowout but no injuries were reported; the department applied for and was selected for a state grant that will supply modern hydraulic extrication tools (replacing older equipment), enabling smaller teams to perform rescues. Phillips said the grant supplies equipment rather than cash, and he expects the tools to materially improve extrication capabilities.
Council members also pursued operational concerns about airport staffing and DOT coordination, noting the technical nature of runway clearing and potential impacts on emergency services, including Coast Guard access. Several councilors urged documenting the staffing and safety concerns with state representatives so the issues are on the record.
No formal council action was taken on these reports during the public session; many of the items were informational or identified as follow-up items for staff.
