Trappe council will ask MDE to approve acceptance of treated effluent from Lakeside development

The Trappe Town Council voted Aug. 7 to request Maryland Department of the Environment approval to accept treated effluent from the Lakeside wastewater treatment plant into the town’s lagoon.
Town Attorney Lyndsey Ryan explained that MDE must approve the process whether the effluent is placed directly into Trappe’s lagoon or routed through Lakeside’s pumping station; Lakeside is currently trucking treated effluent to Hurlock for further processing. Superintendent Steve Callahan and staff told the council the volume would be under Lakeside’s permitted 30,000 gallons per day and that accepting the flow into the town lagoon would allow Trappe to manage incoming flow to avoid operational issues.
Commissioner Michael Sullivan moved that the town send a letter to MDE requesting approval to accept Lakeside’s treated effluent into Trappe’s lagoon; Commissioner Walter Chase seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
