Zionsville board approves supplemental novels and human sexuality materials for 2026–27

The Zionsville Community Schools Board of School Trustees on June 8 unanimously approved supplemental instructional materials recommended for middle-school Spanish and Zionsville Community High School English courses and confirmed the district will post human sexuality supplemental materials on its website, as required by state law.
Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Kris Devereaux presented the list of proposed novels and classroom materials, which teachers and administrators selected for specific courses. Middle-school Spanish recommendations include La Chica Nueva by Jennifer Degenhardt and Arroz Con Cosas by Margarita Pérez García. High-school English recommendations included titles for English 9 such as Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds, Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang, New Kid by Jerry Craft and others; English 10 and AP Seminar selections were also included.
Ms. Devereaux reminded the board that the Indiana Department of Education updated K–12 standards for human sexuality in 2023 and that Senate Enrolled Act 442 (effective July 1, 2025) changed some required curricular elements and terminology. Under SEA 442, curriculum must include age-appropriate information on consent, instruction on human growth and development in pregnancy (including at least three minutes of ultrasound video and computer-generated animation demonstrating weekly development), must be delivered in person unless a class is fully online, and must be approved by the governing body with materials published on the district website. The district also reiterated that parents retain an opt-out option in registration materials and before instruction is taught.
Board members voted 4–0 to adopt the supplemental materials as presented. The motion was made by Dr. Christy Wessel-Powell and seconded by Mr. Michael Berg.
The district will post the approved human sexuality videos and presentations on its website for parental review and proceed with the approved supplemental texts in the 2026–27 school year.
