Millburn committee adopts community energy plan to pursue grants and reduce emissions

The Millburn Township Committee voted to adopt a community energy plan intended to identify practical steps to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and energy costs and to make the township eligible for state and federal grants.

Sponsor remarks said the plan was developed over the past year by the environmental commission and township staff with a grant from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. "The purpose of the plan is straightforward—to identify practical ways for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy cost, and to move our community closer to the state goal of a 100% clean energy," the sponsor said.

Committee members emphasized that adopting the plan does not bind the township to immediate actions. One member described the plan as a "wish list" required to qualify for grant funding and said any specific projects would still require separate approvals (planning boards, committee votes, or budget allocations). Discussion mentioned near-term steps such as energy-efficiency upgrades to town hall and installing electric-vehicle charging stations as examples of possible actions the plan could support.

The committee approved Resolution 26-181 by roll call vote, with members noting the plan will help the township compete for grants and funding to implement items identified in the plan.

Next steps: the township will use the plan to pursue grant opportunities and will bring individual projects and any zoning or capital decisions back to the committee for approval.
