Richmond County schools: resurfacing plans, safety tech and superintendent to retire Aug. 1

Representatives of Richmond County Public Schools updated supervisors on several operational items and announced a leadership transition.
A schools representative (speaker 9) told the Board the elementary drop-off/paving project will be repaved the week of July 20, requiring minor schedule adjustments to kindergarten camp. The division described a 'teachers of tomorrow' program with 14 students placed as quasi-paraprofessionals and noted arrangements for dual-enrollment credits with local community college and Mary Baldwin scholarships for some students.
On safety technology, the schools reported selecting an "e3 emergency communications" system with mapping and instant notification features to connect teachers and first responders during medical or intruder incidents; staff estimated the system would cost approximately $5,000 per year and praised its mapping to assist EMS and the sheriff's office.
The school representative also described federal program allotments (Title I and Title II) and other federal grant-funded positions and services. Finally, the schools noted Superintendent Dr. Davis will retire Aug. 1 and that the school board is conducting a statewide search; an interim superintendent will be named and teachers return in early August with the first day of school set for Aug. 13.
Supervisors thanked the schools for the updates and congratulated staff on student achievements highlighted in the report.
