Police and fire chiefs praise volunteers after busy event; chiefs report staffing, grants and station progress

Police Chief Jerry Coker presented the May monthly recap to the council, saying calls for service increased to 180 in May, up from 135 the previous year, while incident reports were 59 and crash reports totaled three. Chief Coker said two officers have left the department and the department is advertising for certified officers.
Chief Coker also thanked volunteers and staff for the successful Balloons over Angel Fire weekend, saying event traffic control and staffing worked well.
Fire Chief Jason Vance told the council the village submitted a Firewise application (the village applied for a coverage area of more than 1,000 homes) and praised the wildland crew’s recent 14‑day deployment, which should generate billing revenue for the department. He said the CWA perimeter‑clearance grant for surrounding areas totals $10,000,000, but work specifically in Angel Fire is awaiting the outcome of a financial audit.
On Fire Station 1, Chief Vance reported concrete and PEMB steel deliveries are mostly on schedule, with some window and door scheduling causing a minor delay; the station should progress to underground utilities and stem-wall work in the coming weeks. He also said an EMS service agreement is before the Village of Eagle Nest council for consideration and hoped it would pass before July 1.
