Public works: meters installed, workforce housing progress and recurring water leaks

Public works staff updated the council on several operational items affecting residents.
The village’s new solid-waste scales have functioned well in tests and will be made available to the public when pricing takes effect July 1, staff said. The committee will monitor acceptance of the new pricing after launch.
On workforce housing, crew work has cut four of seven house sites and the village anticipates starting utility installation for those four lots next week. Staff said the contractor doing foundation work may begin in the second week of July depending on scheduling.
The meter-installation contractor UMS had installed 109 meters as of the morning reported and has exceeded the previous contractor’s monthly performance. A recently discovered leak on a newly installed meter was repaired the following morning.
Public works also reported an unusual cluster of leaks across the village, which staff attributed mainly to aged materials and past installation techniques. The council heard that $5,600,000 is allocated for repair and replacement of some of that infrastructure.
Questions from councilors focused on applicants for workforce-housing units and whether the contractor-related meter work might be employed directly by the village in the future.
