Commission authorizes studies for expanded wellness center and replacement pool

The Danville City Commission voted July 13 to advance feasibility work for two major recreation projects: a pro forma and operations evaluation for an expanded indoor recreation/wellness center (proposed as a city–hospital partnership) and a comparative feasibility study for replacing the Bunny Davis Center pool at Millennium Park or siting a facility at the fairgrounds.
City staff described the wellness-center evaluation as a conceptual next step. The requested work would cost $30,000, to be split evenly in the current proposal with hospital administration (city share $15,000). The evaluation will model revenue and operations and inform any future negotiations about an operations agreement with the hospital. The commission approved the resolution to proceed.
On the pool-replacement study, staff said the analysis will compare capacity, projected users, revenue and operating expenses for the Millennium Park site (between the pickleball area and the skate park) and a fairgrounds location. The commission asked that findings be reviewed by the joint parks-and-rec/county committee so the county can weigh in on potential 50–50 partnership options. Staff emphasized the study is meant to inform design capacity, operating costs and next steps rather than to select a site immediately.
The research phase approved on July 13 will produce the cost, capacity and operating assumptions commissioners requested; if authorized, staff will return with a pro forma and options for how a city-hospital-county partnership could be structured for operations and capital.
