Calendar and policy: The board approved the 2025–26 traditional calendar after staff explained a handful of changes (some report‑card date adjustments and scattered early‑release days to allow staff time for conferences). The board also adopted board policy 5150 (external‑agency reporting) on the second reading.
Contracts and grants: The board approved a sole‑source services agreement with OpportunityCulture (Public Impact) to provide technical assistance and professional learning for implementing the OpportunityCulture staffing model. Staff reported the contract not to exceed $20,557 to be paid from PRC 022 funds. The consent agenda included an arts and music donation of $5,000 from Hitachi to support Tarboro High School and Nash High School and a grant application to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program (requesting $250,000 per year, $750,000 total over three years).
Bus purchases: The board authorized purchase orders for two replacement 66‑passenger school buses authorized by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction: one Freightliner (purchase payable to Carolina Thomas) and one International (White’s International). The transcript recorded purchase amounts of about $153,594–$153,597 for one bus and $154,367 for the other, with a total reported in the meeting of $307,961. Staff said the buses meet NCDPI replacement criteria (20 years of service or 250,000 miles) and that NCDPI will make payments on the district’s behalf.
Partnerships and extracurriculars: The board approved an MOU to launch an Edgecombe County elementary basketball league in partnership with Edgecombe County Parks and Recreation, contingent on final review by the school board attorney. The board also approved an extracurricular activities addendum for spring sports.
Personnel and closed session: The board voted to enter closed session under North Carolina’s open‑meetings law to discuss personnel matters, seek legal counsel and review student records protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (20 U.S.C. § 1232g). Following the closed session the board approved personnel management actions discussed in closed session and later approved closed‑session minutes from Feb. 10, 2025.
The board adjourned at the conclusion of the March meeting.
