The Whittier City Council adopted Resolution No. 2025-44, approving Landmark Designation No. HRC25-0002 to place the property at 8016 Santa Fe Springs Road (the Googie Carwash) on the City's Local Official Register of Historic Landmarks.
Director of Community Development Ben Pongetti presented the staff report. The public hearing was opened by Mayor Vinatieri. The applicant and owner, Dan Kassel, and nearby residents Helen Rahder and Magdalena Moe provided public comment. Mr. Kassel answered council questions about the number of employees at the car wash and investments made in the property. Following council deliberation, Council Member Mary Ann Pacheco moved and Council Member Fernando Dutra seconded adoption of Resolution No. 2025-44; the motion passed 4-0-1 with Council Member Cathy Warner recorded as absent for the vote in the minutes.
The minutes record that the property will be placed on the Local Official Register of Historic Landmarks and note applicable municipal code and CEQA exemptions cited in the staff report. The resolution and related documents are on file with the City Clerk.
