The Whittier City Council on April 22 confirmed the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission’s decision to deny appeals concerning the Parnell Park Renovation and Improvements Project and approved replacement of 178 trees at Parnell Park, 15930 Lambert Road.
Interim Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services David Montgomery-Scott presented the staff report and answered council questions about community engagement. Steve Rydzon of SWA Group, the project consultant, answered questions about the diversity of proposed tree species, growth periods and the inclusion of drought-tolerant trees. Council Member Cathy Warner moved and Council Member Fernando Dutra seconded the motion to confirm the commission’s denial of appeals; the motion carried unanimously.
Council members asked about timing for a future groundbreaking and staff responded that scheduling details would be provided as planning advances.
