Vero Beach veterans committee approves minutes, updates cenotaph map and July 4 plans

The Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary Advisory Committee unanimously approved the June 3, 2026 meeting minutes with a wording correction and received routine updates on the cenotaph map, Independence Day activities, and a proposed street dedication.
Michelle Dale asked that the June 3 minutes be corrected so the event name reads: "American Gold Star Mothers Walkathon for Military Veterans Suicide Awareness." Chairman John Michael Matthews moved to approve the minutes as corrected; Vice Chairman Curtis Paulisin seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Matthews reported the cenotaph map was updated May 7, 2026, adding Lance Corporal Stephenson’s name; copies were distributed and are on file with the City Clerk. During public comment, Stephanie Fortunato voiced support for recognizing military units and non-personalized insignias.
On event planning, Matthews said Tammy Bursick coordinated the USA All Day July 4 activities. "There were about 60 participants in the parade and there will be an antique car show at the Old Train Station with 20-30 antique cars," Matthews said. Bursick told the Committee the program will be replayed on the City's website and that event information is available at www.covb.org.
Matthews also provided information on a proposed street naming to honor Sergeant Sylvester McIntosh, a Vietnam veteran. Members thanked each other for ongoing assistance to veterans and Dale reminded attendees the American Gold Star Mothers Walkathon is scheduled for Nov. 1, 2026.
The Committee confirmed its next meeting for Aug. 5, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. in City Hall, Council Chambers. The meeting adjourned at 10:25 a.m.
