Umatilla Library launches Canopy streaming trial for patrons, library pays $1,500 for first year

Library staff told the Umatilla Library Advisory Committee on July 15 that the library will trial Canopy, a new streaming service available to cardholders.
Staff described how Canopy works: patrons receive 25 tickets per month that they can redeem for documentaries, movies and shows; some titles cost one ticket while others cost three. "There's also a family section where all of the family movies are free," the staff member said. Access requires a library card and the last four digits of the patron’s phone number, similar to how patrons log in to Libby.
Staff said the library will test Canopy for a year on a fixed payment model, paying $1,500 for the first year. The library will rely on the vendor to cover any patron overages for year one, after which pricing may be adjusted.
Committee members did not take formal action on the trial during the meeting; staff said they will monitor usage and report back if pricing or access needs to change.
