The Board adopted a resolution on July 13 authorizing the donation of the service badge and the sale of a county sidearm to Sheriff Ricky Buchanan for $1 upon his retirement. The resolution, read into the record by the chair, cited a state statute as the legal basis for the donation and sale as read at the meeting.
Following adoption, commissioners and staff presented remarks honoring Buchanan’s roughly 30 years in local law enforcement and thanked his deputies for their service. Buchanan accepted the recognition and urged continued support for public‑safety staffing and equipment moving forward.
Separately, staff explained the transition process for the office: Sheriff Buchanan’s retirement takes effect at midnight on the 31st; Chief Deputy Mace will assume acting sheriff duties until the formal appointment process is completed. The board agreed to schedule a special meeting for a formal appointment on Monday, Aug. 10 at 8 a.m.
To cover the interim period, the board voted to approve a bond for Chief Deputy Mace at the statutory maximum of $25,000, effective Aug. 1. The bond approval was recorded by voice vote; the board did not conduct a roll‑call vote on the record.
No party disputed the resolution or the bond at the meeting. The board did not approve any additional compensation changes at this session.
