Fairhope highlights Baldwin County utility interns gaining hands-on experience

At the Fairhope City work session, staff introduced three Baldwin County utility interns and invited them to describe their summer assignments and what they had learned.
Alex Heilman, who said he attends Baldwin Preparatory Academy and is working in fleet maintenance, described learning diesel work and small-engine repairs. "I've been getting to work on my hands," Heilman said, adding the experience complements his HVAC training at school.
Isabel Connor, introduced as a wastewater intern, said working with clarifiers and the lab surprised her and increased her interest in maintenance and hands-on science tasks. "There are so many things that go on with them that I didn't realize," she said.
Ben Fandrich, an electric-department intern from Fairfield High School, said he had climbed poles, helped with transmission pole setups and learned meter checks and underground work. Council members joked about pole-climbing contests and praised the interns' enthusiasm.
Council members and staff said the internship program is valuable for exposing students to municipal trades and could help recruit employees or give residents a better understanding of city operations. The council thanked the interns for participating and encouraged continued departmental support for the program.
