Board hears construction and auditorium updates; curtain and carpet replacements could add tens of thousands

Project managers briefed the board on progress at the stadium and across campus construction projects and described several finish issues affecting the auditorium.
A construction presenter said interior finishes are about 98% complete in some areas and that the scoreboard structure and framing are installed, but the press box work encountered a steel delay of roughly four weeks because the original press box could not be reused. "Once we started deconstructing your original press box, it was a weld-and-welded situation; it couldn't be reused," the presenter said, noting contractors are sourcing new steel.
Contractors also apologized for delays and an ordering error on seats; new cushions were expected to arrive Oct. 1 and installation was scheduled to begin Oct. 11 with roughly a week–and–a–half install window. Board members pressed contractors for a plan to ensure seats are in place for upcoming games.
In the auditorium, contractors and staff described finish issues: side curtains were treated as a different length and color than shown in the renderings and the main front stage curtain arrived in a shade different than the intended darker blue. The contractor estimated replacing the front curtain would cost about $61,000; separately the aisle carpet was installed as gray instead of the planned blue and replacement was estimated at roughly $61,000, with the contractor offering a credit for some of the cost. The presenter said adding LED backlighting in skylights to create nighttime glow was an additional option at about $17,000.
Project staff also walked the board through the schedule-of-values and tax treatment; after clarifying where gross receipts tax was recorded in the contractor’s schedule, staff said the overall project budget can be reconciled toward the original $10 million figure and that about $226,000 remains in the owner's contingency. "So right now, you actually have about 226,000 in your, owner's contingency," the project manager said.
Board members did not take a final vote on curtain or carpet replacements during the meeting; staff said they would bring final cost/credit language and any needed action items to a future packet for board consideration.
