Helen Jewey, a member of Medfield Environment Action, opened the event and read a written statement from Medfield public health nurse Emily Delaglio that warned gas leaf blowers can exceed 100 decibels and produce exhaust and particulates that “can irritate your lungs and make conditions like asthma worse,” particularly endangering children, the statement said.
The panel included Jeff Hyman (Medfield resident and MEA member), homeowner Ken Kellner, George Grit of Eco Quiet Lawn Care and Oliver, owner and founder of Varsity Lawn Care. Jeff framed the discussion with local context, noting that while Massachusetts has no statewide ban on gas blowers, some municipalities restrict their use and community approaches vary.
Why the panelists favored alternatives

Oliver said switching to electric equipment improved employee well-being: “When I first made the switch from gas... my employees told me when they were using the gas, their hands would shake after each day at work,” he said, arguing that electric gear reduces on-the-job stress and lowers PPE needs. Ken, a former landscaper who now uses mostly electric tools at home, said quieter equipment also eases personal stress and sets an example for neighbors.

Panelists discussed full life-cycle issues: George described efforts to rebuild and reuse battery cells obtained at reduced cost and called for stronger recycling systems to prevent batteries from being discarded.
