San Antonio staff report 4,276‑light gap in residential streets; $5M reported as remaining for program

The Public Safety Committee received an update on the city’s streetlight program, including the number of residential segments analyzed, the gap in fixtures and the program’s current installation pace.

Yamitama, identified in the meeting as director of development services, said staff surveyed 3,292 residential streets and identified a need for about 4,276 lights to meet the target spacing. The presentation included budget figures as stated by staff: it referenced a broader $33,000,000 program, said the program had received "13.88 million" and that approximately "5,000,000.78" remained for future installs as of the presentation. Staff also described a process of door notices, property authorizations where required, and that some solar installations avoid right‑of‑way permitting and can be completed faster once locations are identified.

Councilmembers raised questions about district prioritization, the difference between solar and wired fixtures, when preapproved locations would be used and whether a UDC change (from 300 to 200 feet spacing in some contexts) would be necessary; staff said a UDC amendment could be considered in the 2027 cycle. Members requested district‑level location lists and hotspot mapping overlaying crime data to prioritize investment.
