Port Edwards board adopts revisions to traffic code, treating electric bikes like bicycles and updating school parking language

Port Edwards trustees voted April 29 to adopt revisions to Village Ordinance 7 (traffic code) that remove outdated provisions, reclassify electric bicycles and update parking restrictions near the local high school.

The chair walked the board through the packet changes in the proposed ordinance. The revisions remove an outdated 350.06 firearms and bows-and-arrows reference and obsolete snowmobile subsections; narrow golf-cart provisions so they apply specifically to golf carts; and remove several electric-bike-specific rules so electric bicycles are treated the same as conventional bicycles under the code.

Board members also corrected a street-name reference and adjusted a parking description: the west side of Wisconsin Drive will be defined from its intersection with Edwards Avenue to 2nd Street (a prior reference to the now-closed YMCA parking lot was removed). The packet retains three dedicated 15-minute drop-off spots for school pick-up in the designated area.

Members discussed prior public-safety committee input and asked staff (Ben) to confirm whether previously approved changes were correctly reflected in the packet; the chair said the board could approve now and make any needed adjustments next month if staff identifies omissions. After discussion, the board called for a voice vote and the motion to approve the updated traffic code was carried.

Outcome: the board approved the updated Village Ordinance 7 by voice vote; members asked staff to verify chapter 7 edits and return with any corrections at the May meeting.
