CADB staff say SADC objects to Sayre Farm preservation without a signalized rail crossing; applicant to present in May

At the March 23 meeting of the Cape May County Agriculture Development Board, Director Kevin Quinn said the State Agriculture Development Committee (SADC) indicated it would not support the preservation application for Sayre Farm in Lower Township unless a signalized train crossing is provided at an existing, defunct rail right-of-way.
Quinn said that SADC also noted that NJ PACT/REAL and CAFE rules affect the development potential of the parcel. "The SADC indicated they would not support the preservation application for Sayre Farm in Lower Township for the following reasons: the SADC requests that a signalized train crossing be provided at the existing, defunct rail right-of-way and notes that the NJ PACT/ REAL and CAFE rules impact the development potential," he reported.
Quinn told the board that CADB staff were in conversations with the SADC and NJ Transit to explore options if SADC would not participate in cost-sharing; he added that the county would consider preserving the farm on its own if necessary. The Sayre Farm applicant is scheduled to present to the board on May 18, 2026.
The board did not take a formal vote on the Sayre Farm matter at this meeting; discussion was informational and focused on next steps and potential coordination with SADC and NJ Transit.
