Edgecombe County board raises child nutrition procurement threshold, tables budget amendment

The Edgecombe County Board of Education on Dec. 15 approved changes to its child nutrition procurement plan and carried several routine personnel and program motions while postponing its first budget amendment to allow more time for review.
Ms. Magdots, the district’s food service director, told the board the only change to the procurement plan this year is an increase in the small-purchase threshold from $10,000 to $15,000 so the district can “secure more equipment without having to put it out to bid.” The board moved, seconded and approved the procurement plan; the change is effective until the next formal revision.
The procurement change follows a consent package the board approved that included fundraisers, a child nutrition bonus program not to exceed $125,000 (funded from child nutrition funds), and school grants; board members approved the consent items on a single motion. Dr. Brown, the superintendent, also reported on summer teacher work placements, a community food giveaway partnership, a parent involvement forum on IEPs and supports, and congratulated Tarbell High School on its recent state football championship.
Budget Amendment 1 was presented by Vice Chair Janice, who said the amendment reflects additional federal grant revenue and revisions to special revenue accounts. Board members asked for time to review details and noted a rounding discrepancy on the back page; the board later voted to table Budget Amendment 1 until the board’s regular January 2026 meeting so members could examine the revised figures.
Other formal actions included approval of personnel management, authorization of extracurricular winter sports, and approval of a resolution of dismissal (the employee’s name is recorded inconsistently in the minutes as both "Jamice Williams" and "Jimmy Williams"). For each motion the board recorded the motion, a second, and carried the motion by voice vote.
The board closed its meeting after a motion to adjourn. The budget amendment will return for action at the January meeting; the procurement plan change remains in effect until superseded.
