McAllen officials and tourism partners celebrated the city’s new Film Friendly Texas certification, which city and regional representatives said should make it easier for film and media productions to shoot locally and bring immediate spending to restaurants, hotels and service vendors.
A visitor-industry presenter told the City Commission that the designation "is a signal to the film industry that McAllen is open, organized, and ready to work" and thanked Visit McAllen staff for helping secure the designation. Jose Lopez, regional representative for South Texas with the Texas Film Commission, congratulated the city and said the certification connects McAllen to "a statewide network" designed to promote Texas as a media production destination.
Officials described practical benefits they expect from the certification: a single point of contact through Visit McAllen for location coordination and permitting, simplified logistics for producers, and extra bookings for hotels, restaurants and local vendors during shoots. "Every production that comes to McAllen doesn't just bring cameras. It brings hotel stays, restaurant tabs, equipment rentals, catering contracts, local hires on crew, and direct dollars into small businesses," one presenter said.
The City Commission did not take a separate vote on the designation; the presentation served to acknowledge the certification and to thank staff and partners. Staff emphasized that Visit McAllen will act as the coordinating point for production inquiries going forward, a step officials said will lower barriers for producers considering McAllen over other cities.
Next steps discussed briefly included improving location coordination, training for local crews, and highlighting signature locations such as the McAllen Performing Arts Center and Cine El Rey Theater when marketing the community to production companies.
