The Providence City Council adopted a resolution honoring Roberto Gonzalez for more than five decades of advocacy and public service to the Latino community and requested the ceremonial renaming of Fisk Street in his honor.
The clerk read the resolution describing Gonzalez’s long service in education, public service and community development and the citation noting awards and community impact. Sponsors and the majority leader welcomed Gonzalez and his family to the chamber; the majority leader asked Gonzalez and his family to remain after the meeting for a citation and photographs.
Members described the renaming as a ‘‘historic moment’’ and praised Gonzalez’s mentorship and leadership across generations. The council passed the resolution by voice vote and agreed to transmit copies to Rhode Island College and the Department of Public Works to arrange honorary signage.
Council members closed the meeting with recognition of community leaders and encouraged attendance at upcoming cultural festivals.
