Athens pilots herd grazing to clear bike-path invasives; hazardous-waste drop-off set for July 18

"Within a 24 hour period of time, these goats go to town on removing all kinds of nasty invasive," the mayor said, adding that the animals are watered daily and cared for by the company the city hired for the work. He asked residents not to feed or touch the goats while they work.
Separately, the mayor announced an Athens County hazardous-waste disposal day on Saturday, July 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 5991 Industrial Drive in The Plains. He listed accepted items: paint, motor oil, antifreeze, batteries, household chemicals and cleaners, and propane cylinders up to 20 pounds. Limits include six five-gallon containers per vehicle and proof of residency; electronics, appliances, tires, regular trash and business waste will not be accepted. The mayor also promoted the Athens CitySource app for reporting maintenance issues and the Nixel alert service for customized emergency and weather alerts, and he reminded listeners of upcoming public meetings (City Council recess through Aug. 3; Shade Tree Commission meeting and rec advisory board sessions) and community events such as Ohio Brew Week closing on Saturday.
